Open Gate recording
Open Gate is a method that captures video using the entire area of a camera’s image sensor, rather than cropping full frame lenses to standard aspect ratios like 16:9 or 17:9. By utilising the full sensor height and width – often in formats like 3:2 or 4:3 – Open Gate maximises resolution and image data. For example, a full-frame sensor might deliver a full 7K image at 6960 x 4640 using Open Gate, whereas A traditional 17:9 DCI aspect ratio would reduce the height of the image to 6960 x 3672.
The key advantage of Open Gate is flexibility. It provides more room in post-production for reframing, stabilisation, and high-resolution delivery across multiple formats. This is especially valuable for creators delivering to both cinematic and social platforms, allowing for simultaneous 16:9, 9:16, or even square aspect ratios from a single source. In addition, utilising the full height of the sensor also benefits anamorphic shooting by capturing a larger cinematic field of view.
